A new YMCA in Ulverston in Cumbria, is set to be an ambitious state of the art school and youth centre. Conlon Construction is the main contractor for the multi-million pound project. YMCA Lakeside, is set to become one of the largest outdoor education centres in the UK. It will be situated close to the banks of Lake Windermere, and the centre will offer over 50 outdoor water and land based activities to transform young lives with instructor led experiences.

The outdoor centre will comprise of 265 beds, a 60 bed training centre and 12 eco family lodges. Part of the redevelopment involved the demolition of a number of existing 1950s buildings before construction began on the purpose-built new centre. Conlon Construction worked closely with the YMCA to keep the site operational through the redevelopment, so that youth groups and schools were able to continue using the facilities.

At present, more than 7,000 young people visit the YMCA Lakeside each year, and once the new centre is finished, this is expected to increase to 10,000 per year. The new centre, with its new facilities, is being designed to be a stimulating and inspiring place for young people.

The construction of the building incorporates a number of sustainable and eco-friendly elements. These include a design that will minimise the visual impact on the landscape, so that it will blend into the natural surroundings. During the construction of the new YMCA in Ulverston Easi-Edge supplied 555 LM of edge protection barriers to protect construction workers on site.

The YMCA in Ulverston provides transformative opportunities for young people by enabling them to spend time outdoors. This new project, set in the heart of an World Heritage Site, is an exciting new centre for the charity that has been operating for over a hundred years.
