Ponteland Schools

Edge Protection, Ponteland Schools and Leisure Centre

Northumberland County Council appointed Kier Construction to deliver a landmark education development which has been designed by Faulkner Browns. Kier will build a primary school in the centre of Ponteland’s town centre as well as a secondary school and a leisure centre. This project is one of the biggest education and recreation schemes ever established in the county.

The 100,000 metre squared plot is located to the south of Ponteland town centre. The 420 place primary school and 1,600 place second school will feature teaching rooms and learning support areas and a lecture theatre. In addition to state of the art teaching facilities there will also be breakout areas and a multi-use hall.

The leisure centre will include a six lane 25 metre swimming pool, gym, climbing wall and a soft play zone, as well as a sports bar, studios and spa facilities. In courts and other sports facilities have been designed to be used by both the schools and the local community. The leisure centre will also be home to Ponteland United Football Club, Ponteland Rugby Club, Ponteland Cricket Club and Ponteland Archery Club.

Kier supported local labour and apprentices during the construction phase of this project. Easi-Edge delivered 3497 LM of edge protection barriers on this large site in Ponteland. The schools will offer young people modern education facilities and the leisure centre will promote healthy lifestyles in the area. The local council is in partnership with Active Northumberland, which is dedicated to creating active places and healthy communities.

The new facilities will hopefully encourage more people to get active and improve their health in a modern environment.
