The new Perry Barr transport interchange will replace the existing bus interchange and train station, which was originally constructed in the 1960s when the railway line was electrified. It was designed to accommodate up to 250,000 journeys per year versus today where the number can exceed 700,000.

The project is being led by West Midlands Rail Executive and Transport for West Midlands, part of the West Midlands Combined Authority in partnership with Birmingham City Council, Network Rail and West Midlands Trains.

The development of the bus and rail interchange is part of the wider £500m regeneration of Perry Barr, which includes the Athletes Village for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, as well as changes to the road network and introduction of Sprint rapid transit buses.

The previous station and bus interchange had poor access and limited facilities, with no toilets or bike parking. Accessing the bus interchange from the train station was also difficult for pedestrians and the road layout made it difficult for buses. West Midlands Rail Executive has invested £30.9 million in this redevelopment project which will have a fit for purpose modern train station and bus interchange with increased capacity and better facilities.

The new train station will be able to support 1.1 million passengers a year and it supports the council’s ambitions for a greener future with realistic alternatives to travelling by car. The new train station, as part of the transport interchange, will feature an accessible toilet, passenger help points, a ticket office, secure bike parking, CCTV and lifts and upgraded stairs.

Entrances to the station will be on sides which makes it easier to access for pedestrians and it will be linked to the One Stop Shopping Centre. The new bus interchange has an improved layout, so buses can get to it more quickly, new and enhanced bus shelters and a new pedestrian area between the interchange, train station and One Stop Shopping Centre.

BAM Construction are the main contractor on the project and Easi-Edge are providing over 600LM of edge protection barriers to the site. The new Perry Barr transport interchange is a key part of a wider transformation that will make Perry Barr one of the most connected places in Birmingham. It will provide a gateway for visitors heading to the Alexander Stadium for the Commonwealth Games, and leave a lasting legacy for people in north Birmingham.
