The Cardiff Transport Interchange is a new £89 million scheme which will be the flagship project as part of the Central Square development from Rightacres. Designed by Holder Mathias Architects the mixed-use project is one of the largest developments undertaken in the city centre.

It will deliver 500,000 square feet of new space, which includes a 14-bay bus interchange with a covered concourse, 318 apartments for the private rented centre and approximately 90,000 square feet of modern open-plan office space. The interchange will embrace efficient building techniques during the construction phase, such as off-site manufacturing of bathroom pods, to shorten the process. As part of the construction process, Easi-Edge are supplying over 2800 LM of edge protection barriers.

The transport interchange is complex and challenging project with a lot of different aspects. Once it is complete it will provide a modern and innovative environment for different uses. In addition to being a new bus and transport hub for Cardiff, it will delivery city centre accommodation and office space, all in one building.

The new project is being built on a site that until the late 1930s was land occupied by terraces houses and shops. A new bus station was built in 1954 but by the early 2010s it had become an office block which needed renovation and redevelopment.

Sustainability and optimising the design to minimise the environmental impact were also factors during construction to reduce energy and water usage and recycle material. This led to the building being awarded a Home Quality Mark (HQM) ONE certification for sustainability, awarded by BRE.
