Horsforth School
Horsforth School in Leeds, West Yorkshire is a popular and oversubscribed school that was in desperate need of more space to accommodate more pupils. Morgan Sindall Construction were awarded the £5 million project that will deliver new facilities and increase the school’s capacity from 1,400 to 1,765 pupils.
The new two-storey teaching block will also incorporate a new school entrance on the south side of the site, together with the construction of new sports facilities. Horsforth school will be able to offer spaces to sixth forth and the extension will create a further 20 full time jobs at the school.
The 1,658 square metre building includes computer rooms, science labs, a library and classrooms, as well as 20 parking spaces. It is being built on previously existing tennis courts and four new courts have also been built to replace them.
As part of the project, Morgan Sindall Construction joined forces with Leeds City Council, Leeds further education providers, and local organisations to raise career aspirations and targeted programmes that address the city’s key educational, employment and social requirements. To ensure that pupils remain at the heart of the programme, sessions were held at Horsforth School and other local institutions to demonstrate the varied roles and rewarding career paths within the construction industry. During construction, students from the Leeds College of Building were also offered work experience for one day a week on the project.
During the installation of the steel frame, pupils from Horsforth School were invited to take part in a steel signing ceremony, and observe the progression of their new teaching block. To protect the public and workers on site, Easi-Edge supplied over 300 LM of edge protection barriers. Hoarding panels were also erected and tree protection was installed with a temporary public right of way diversion until the work was completed.
