One Manchester, selected Engie to create a modern development for 109 new homes across two sites on Gorton Lane in Manchester. The disused land will consist of 921 apartments which will be offered on a rent to buy basis and 18 three and four bedroom houses available for shared ownership.

All of the homes in this development will benefit from having access to green space and each house will have its own garden. The one, and two bedroom apartments, have also been designed with communal green spaces to create a community spirit and provide a place for residents to spend time outside. The project on Gorton Lane is just one of several in the city to provide much needed affordable housing.

The work on both sites is being supported by Curtins consultants and OMI Architects. Easi-Edge are supplying ENGIE with 2190 LM of edge protection barriers on both sites. The goal of the project for Engie, working with One Manchester, is to create a sustainable and thriving community with affordable housing. The project also involves Manchester City Council and Homes England to deliver affordable home ownership through different finance options of shared ownership and rent to buy schemes.

The Gorton Lane housing project is one of several developments in West Gorton. Manchester City Council has a vision of being a zero carbon city by 2038. As such they are working on other projects to provide affordable homes with smart technology to reduce energy consumption. During the construction phase on Gorton Lane, and going forward on future projects, the council is working with contractors to find practical ways to reduce carbon emissions when building new housing.

Future housing projects in the city will attempt to reduce energy consumption by 20%, provide better thermal performance and utilise renewable and clean energy sources, as well as generate energy with solar panels, which will be sold back to the National Grid. Climate changes is a key challenge that is facing everyone and the council is looking at ways to support this with their housing developments.
