The Blundell Street development is the latest project in the Baltic Triangle in Liverpool, with ISG Construction set to deliver a 9 storey apartment block. The residential project in Liverpool’s creative and digital quarter has been designed by Tim Groom Architects and will use a steel framing solution, which includes two basement levels for parking.

It will deliver 200 one, two and three bedroom apartments on Blundell Street, in addition to a residents’ lounge and gym. During the construction phase of the development of the apartment block Easi-Edge will provide 4,300 LM of edge protection.

The Baltic Triangle, just south of the city centre, was previously used to handle good transported via the docks. Since 2012 there have been more than £128 million of investments in the area, transforming it into one that includes an eclectic mix of traditional businesses as well creative companies such as creative agencies, PR companies, architects, designers and musicians.

A steel framing solution was used on the project as the moist appropriate, giving the size of the spans between columns. It also made the process quicker with fewer deliveries which minimised the impact on neighbours in the surrounding area. Stability for the steel frame is provided by a combination of traditional flat bar cross bracing in the lower floors and moment frames for the two upper levels.

This hybrid design was chosen in order to assist ISG in ensuring that materials needed by the follow-on trades could be easily transported within the upper floors, while maintaining full stability to the structure during construction.

The residential apartment block on Blundell Street will be U-shaped, with the open end facing north. The opening leads to a landscape courtyard and in keeping with the street’s former industrial heritage, the completed structure will be brick clad to match nearby surviving warehouses.
