Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD)

The Manchester Engineering Campus Development is the University of Manchester’s new project to create a world class engineering campus. This development is part of a ten year transformation project that has been initiated by the university to build a single campus with international standards, offering bespoke educational facilities to students and staff.

Once complete, the Manchester Engineering Campus Development will be the largest home for engineering in any UK university. The main contractor for the project is Balfour Beatty and this project will be delivered with collaboration between builders, architects and engineers. It also represents the single largest construction project ever completed by a higher education institution in the UK.

This huge development includes a number new but also existing buildings. Several buildings are being refurbished and extended. The eight-storey 80,000 square metre Engineering Building A, Engineering Building B, and the James Chadwick Building are being refurbished, while the Grade II listed Oddfellows Hall and the York Street Building are being extended. The new engineering campus will create purpose-designed blended lecture theatres, teaching laboratories, student workshops as well as spaces to support the outreach and social engagement initiatives.

During the construction phase of the new buildings, Easi-Edge are supplying 470 LM of edge protection barriers. The engineering campus is incorporating a number of sustainable features into the design and it is expected to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating for its features.

Bicycles are being available on campus, there are electrical charging stations for cars, and the landscaping features elements that are designed to encourage biodiversity. Energy saving, waste management and water conservation techniques are also being employed across the development.
